Beginning Experience Birmingham

Widowed, divorced, and separated are welcome at the Beginning Experience Weekly Program which meets each Tuesday evening from 6-8:30 pm. The cost is $25 for each 10 week session. Financial assistance is available if needed to attend our program. Free child care is provided for our participants. Please see the directions tab or the calender for upcoming dates.

There are two Weekend Programs given each year. We generally serve 20-40 participants on each of these weekends. The weekend begins on Friday evening and is completed on Sunday afternoon.

We are the local chapter of an international support program for divorced, separated and widowed individuals, and their families to facilitate the resolution of the grief surrounding the end of a marriage / relationship and to promote healing.
The vision of Beginning Experience is to help individuals work through their grief, be healed, transformed and free to love again.

The lay ministers in Beginning Experience are "wounded healers" - specially trained men and women who are themselves widowed, separated, or divorced. They are former participants who have decided to give back to others after receiving help with their own grief, anger, and loneliness. Having experienced similar personal losses, our facilitators can relate to the hurt and alienation suffered by those who have lost a partner.

Beginning Experience (BE) Ministry is an interdenominational peer ministry designed to assist in grief recovery and personal growth for the divorced, widowed, and separated of this community. All who are in need of grief support from the loss of a marriage/relationship are welcome to participate.

Our Weekly Programs (Levels) consist of ten week sessions. This past year we served approximately 350 participants in our Levels program.

Following is a brief description of each 10-week session:

LEVEL 1 - All participants begin here, although we allow new participants to begin at any time during the 10 weeks. Participants are assisted through the stages of grief with personal talks by the facilitators and small group dialogue.

LEVEL 2A - This level focuses on rebuilding when your relationship has ended. We use Bruce Fisher’s book "Rebuilding” Chapters 1-10.

LEVEL 2B - Continues with Chapters 11-20 of Bruce Fisher’s book "Rebuilding”

LEVEL 3 - This Level is for personal growth, examining individual relationship developments. John Powell's book and video series, "Happiness is an Inside Job" and his audio series, "Fully Human, Fully Alive" are used, alternating each 10 weeks.

All levels begin simultaneously each ten week session.
